Extended Warranty For Appliances

You hear from the (pro’s) that you should not buy the extended warranty on your appliances it’s a waste of money. Well I disagree.

In 2003-4 our house burnt from an electrical fire, so my wife and I had to buy all new appliances we opted to buy the extended warranty and we are very happy that we did.

We purchased all our appliances at Sears because we where both brought up that Sears was the place to go for appliances, now we didn’t buy all at once because of the schedule of the contractor (that was a nightmare of its own) but that’s another article.  If we where to buy them all at once you definitely have better buying power to make a deal.

We bought a refrigerator, dishwasher, wall oven, stove top with a down draft, and a washer and dryer.  Any way we bought higher end appliances thinking that we would get a superior product with less problems. Well that was not the case.

The first thing that happened was that we bought the dishwasher because the contractor said that he needed it to finish the kitchen, then there was a delay so we didn’t have it delivered or picked up right away, when we where ready to put it in we found out that it was no longer in the warehouse so we had to get Sears to send it back to the warehouse so we could pick it up witch took another few weeks.

So be aware that there is a time line that you have to pick up or get it delivered before they return it. We then bought the wall oven and the stove top with four burners and a grill for our kitchen island. When the stove top arrived it was damaged so we had to contact Sears to let them know that it had to be replaced, another few weeks delayed. We finally got it delivered and got it installed.

When we got the wall oven we had problems with it fitting into the spot we had built into our cabinets, we got that taken care of and now have an oven. Now since then we had to have sears come out and fix the door on the wall oven that was letting to much heat escape so cooking was not even or took a lot longer to cook, two times and then it wasn’t cooking properly so they had to come out again, now keep in mind that each time they come out to fix any appliances it would have cost me around 3-4 hundred dollars.
We had to get Sears to come out four more times to get the oven to work properly. Well after five times that Sears has to come out to fix the same thing you can demand a new unit, which we had a new oven delivered to us that took three to four weeks without an oven while we where waiting for it to arrive(not fun)

Now I don’t know if you have ever dealt with calling the company of a product that you have bought but your on the phone for a long time, takes up most of your day just to get things resolved.

We next purchased a refrigerator,of course it got delivered damaged so back on the phone to get that resolved, finally got a new one scheduled to be delivered while using a cooler to hold any frig items.

We got our washer and dryer delivered with no problems that I can remember.  So far we had four out of six appliances replaced for one reason or another,(so much for buying high end appliances) it really doesn’t matter how much you pay you will probably still have some kind of problem.

Now since we got everything in and working we figured we would not worry about the appliances for awhile.Well let me tell you that was not the case,so far we had the refrigerator was fixed two more times, the wall oven three more times, the dishwasher three times, and the stove top three times.

Was it worth to buy the extended warranty, YES IT WOULD HAVE COST US THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS If we had to pay out of our pockets. So in conclusion it was definitely worth the few hundred for the extended warranty to save thousands in the long run. That’s why I try to find the companies that are responsible and are customer satisfaction oriented on my site:
