Iceberg, romaine, Broccoli, Green bells, Raspberries – The Produce Report
The Produce Report
Leafy veggies: It appears the rain has left for the time being and has been replaced with bitter cold nights. Iceberg, romaine, green leaf, red leaf, and boston lettuce all continue to slowly ease up. Romaine hearts remain stubborn as retail demand grows stronger. Broccoli and cauliflower are still moderately priced. Fennel, leeks, green chard, and brussels sprouts will have slightly higher prices. Celery is very short due to last weeks’ rain and freezing temps that all but halted celery production.
Veggies: Green bells are nearing the price bottom as supplies are plentiful and quality is very good. Red and yellow bells on the other hand, are very short as cool weather is slowing down ripening. Eggplant is up slightly. Italian and yellow squashes are a great buy. Asparagus remains stable. Green beans have slowed down production, look for higher prices this week.
Berries: Central California strawberry fields had lots of rain and cold making for a tight market, prices are up sharply. Raspberries are pretty much in the same situation. Chilean blueberries are also up this week, quality has been excellent. Mexican blackberries are up slightly.
Melons: Offshore cantaloupes are getting better and the switch is on from the desert product which is waning. Honeydew production is increasing and prices are holding steady. Quality has been very good. Seedless watermelon will continue to get shorter and more expensive. Quality is just average right now.
Tomatoes: Smaller sized rounds are rumored to get easier this week although we haven’t seen any relief just yet. Florida getting back on its feet and a lack of overall demand seem to warrant a softer market. Romas, cherries, and grapes all remain stable from last week. Quality has been very good.
