Leaf markets are sharply higher – The Produce Report
The Produce Report
Northern veggies: Leaf markets are sharply higher. Iceberg and romaine products are the most effected and we are expecting high markets through the end of the month. Broccoli and cauliflower are also on the rise. Some markets that have yet to be affected include, green cabbage, green onions, cilantro, snow peas, brussels sprouts, fennel and white corn.
Veggies: The green and red bell pepper markets are much better. Yellow bells have become incredibly short and prices are reflecting. Italian and yellow squashes are good buys. Green beans have started in Coachella and quality is much better. Asparagus shipments have been delayed, expect a small bump in prices. Desert eggplant is picking up and prices are down.
Berries: Blueberries have come off drastically as air shipments have finally picked up. Prices are back down in normal range. Blackberries look to have another good week and will be the best buy out of all the bush berries. Raspberries and strawberries won’t change much this week.
Melons: Mexican honeydews are showing much better maturity and volume. Cantaloupes remain firm with good quality. Seedless watermelon are the best quality and price we have seen all year.
Citrus: The navel orange crop is increasing, looks good but flavor is not quite there yet. Lemon prices are backing off as south of the border is coming into the market. The lime market remains inexpensive for this time of year.
Tomatoes: Roma tomato quality is good as volume increases and prices continue to drop. New cherry tomato fields are starting which should help ease up this market. Grape tomatoes are also backing off. Round tomatoes are good quality and volume seems to be slowing down but the market hasn’t moved yet.
