Melons – Veggies – Northern Veggies – Citrus – Tomatoes – Pinapples
Market Report
Melons: The abrupt weather changes throughout California have finished off
all melon crops. Cantaloupes are coming in from Arizona and the honeydew
crop is coming from Mexico. Prices are upand sugars are down. Seedless
watermelon should begin crossing through Nogales soon with better quality.
Veggies: The migration has started for vegetables from California to mainland
Mexico. So far we are seeing Italian squash, straightneck yellow squash, and a
few cucumbers kicking off the Nogales season. New crop eggplant is just
beginning out of Coachella. Green and red bells prices are higher. Green
beans remain stable. Asparagus will be a good buy this week.
Northern veggies: A very bad situation in Salinas as big storms will be
moving through growing areas starting tomorrow. Broccoli and cauliflower
demand far exceeded supplies last week and prices are sharply higher.
Iceberg lettuce and all leafy greens are following this pattern and prices are
much higher. Please plan for a very difficult month on both price and quality, as
shelf lives will be compromised.
Citrus: New crop lemons have begun with slightly lower prices and quality is
much improved. Navels oranges will begin soon, we should see quality fruit
about the 1st week in November.
Tomatoes: The round tomato market will be up this week. The roma market is
feeling pressure and prices are slightly higher and quality has been improving.
Cherry and grape tomato markets are tight due to weather and prices are up.
Nuts and bolts: Red and green grapes supplies are dwindling and prices are
rising. Mango prices are higher and all arrivals have been very green.
Pineapples continue to be on the short side, but prices remain stable.
