Produce Report – Tomatoes, Melons, Grapes, Berries, Greens
Produce Report
Veggies: Italian squash volume is dipping temporarily enough forcing prices higher. Yellow squash, blue lakes, and green bells are all doing nicely out of Coachella and prices have come down quite a bit. Red and yellow bells have come off substantially. Asparagus is extremely short and expensive.
Tomatoes: The Baja roma market is in full swing now, the prices and quality have been very good. Cherry and grape tomatoes are also starting to cross with more volume. The round tomato market is on the verge of breaking as Baja crops are just starting to color up. With this first pick, everything seems to be on the larger size. As soon as the smaller fruit comes in the prices will drop.
Melons: California desert melons begin this week but prices are up sharply.Warm weather should help bring the melons to maturity. Seedless watermelons remain stable with moderate prices and good brix.
Grapes: The first of the new crop California fruit is available now. Green Perlettes are looking good with decent sizing and good sugar. New crop reds are still fairly small and low in sugar. We will continue with Chilean crimson reds probably for another week.
Berries: In the strawberry market, nice weather is making for lower prices and good quality. Blackberries will see a strong push with good prices. Raspberries are coming off as supplies improve.California blueberries are dropping as more volume is expected.
Greens: Broccoli and cauliflower are short with higher prices for the next week or so.Cilantro and Italian parsley are both higher as much of the crop is going to seed. Brussels sprouts, snow peas, rapini, and fennel all remain fairly short and expensive. Leaf’s been very good with nice case weights.
