Raspberries, Blackberries, Cauliflower, napa, honeydews, seedless watermelon
The Produce Report
Berries: We have new crops starting up on strawberries with excellent sizing and quality. Look for prices to ease up over the next few weeks. Raspberries remain very short. Blackberries and blueberries hold steady with decent pricing and good quality.
Desert veggies: Iceberg and all leaf continue to improve and get cheaper. Romaine hearts also continue to back off slowly. Celery will start its new crop in Yuma later this week bringing prices down. Cauliflower, napa, and bok choy are still showing strength out of Yuma. The green onion market has gone up recently.
Veggies: The colored bell market looks to come off this week as warmer weather kicks up production. Hopefully yellow will follow suit. Italian and yellow squashes remain stable with very good prices and quality. New crop Mexican asparagus is just beginning to cross in very light supplies. Delayed shipments on Peruvian asparagus has driven this market sharply higher over the holiday.
As the new crop matures this market will back off but that will probably take a week or two.
Melons: Offshore honeydews continue to improve with better prices and sugars. Cantaloupe arrivals are down from last week and prices are reflecting. Quality is good. Seedless watermelon are on the upswing again although we are seeing select labels with better color and sugar.
Nuts and bolts: The lemon market is running low on quality choice fruit which means higher prices. California red and green grapes are on their very last leg and prices are as high as we have seen in years. Chilean imports have been very poor and not marketable.
