This just in from California Restaurant Association

On Tuesday, June 9, a restaurant business in San Diego reported that a team of approximately 6 – 8 inspectors showed up at the restaurant in the morning without notice and mounted a full inspection of the restaurant. According to the owner, the inspectors were apparently from EDD, the Labor Department and Cal OSHA. The inspectors disbursed throughout the restaurant and talked to employees, looked into offices and asked questions of the owner. The various inspectors checked for workers’ compensation insurance, asked about meal/rest breaks, pay periods, the tipping policy and also asked about hazardous material files, taxes and injury protocols. They additionally inquired into restaurant statistics including the number of employees and percentage of taxable sales.

The inspected restaurant is located in the Hillcrest area in San Diego near downtown San Diego. This may or may not be an isolated incident as the CRA has not heard of any further similar inspections. The inspectors indicated this was not a result of a complaint about the restaurant and the owner seemed to think they may be visiting other businesses.
