The Produce Report Aug 23rd – Aug 28th

By Moceri Produce

Melons: Northern California has been peaking on cantaloupes and honeydews. Quality has been excellent with brix as high as 15. Seedless watermelons have improved and prices should back off as well.
Tomatoes: Round vine ripe tomato volume is light but California gas green fruit has kept the market in check. Romas are showing plenty of x-large and jumbo sized product in excellent condition, great for dicing. Cherry and grape tomatoes volumes are down and prices are still reasonable.
Northern veggies: The Salinas Valley has had a slow, cool summer so far effecting production. The stronger veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are OK but leaf is suffering. Iceberg is tight as wholesalers and processors struggle for product and prices increase. Romaine hearts look to be coming off this week. A new crop of artichokes are starting which should carry us into the winter. White corn continues with good pricing and excellent quality.
Veggies: Green and red bell pepper supplies and quality are good. Nice red bells from Connelly Gardens in the mix. Asparagus prices are still very high but we expect more volume in the next week to 10 days. Blue lake beans have become fairly reasonable and quality has been much improved. Italian and yellow squashes markets have been relatively flat lately. Baja cucumber volume is down and prices are reflecting.
Berries: Strawberries are still struggling with volume and size. Local blackberries are picking up steam. Blueberries and raspberries remain stable.
Nuts and bolts: Pineapple volume is down and prices are rising fast. Mangos continue with very good pricing and flavor. Garlic continues to get more and more difficult as Chilean product has finished. Expect higher prices.

I recommended it on digg. The only thing that it’s missing is a bit of speed, the pictures are appearing slowly. However thank you for this information.
