The Produce Report Aug.30th – Sept.4th

By Moceri Produce
Melons: Northern California has been peaking on cantaloupes and honeydews. Quality has been excellent with brix as high as 15. Seedless watermelons have improved and prices should back off as well.
Tomatoes: Round vine ripe tomato volume is light but California gas green fruit has kept the market in check. Romas are showing plenty of x-large and jumbo sized product in excellent condition, great for dicing. Cherry and grape tomatoes volumes are down and prices are creeping upward.
Northern veggies: The Salinas Valley has had a slow, cool summer so far effecting production. Broccoli is trending upward in price. Iceberg has come down as supplies increase. Romaine hearts have come off a bit. New crop artichoke volume is picking up, driving down prices. White corn continues with good pricing and excellent quality.
Veggies: Green and red bell pepper supplies and quality are good. Nice red bells from Connelly Gardens in the mix. Asparagus prices are still strong but have come off a bit, large sizes very tough to find. Green Onion supplies are tight and prices are higher. Green beans have become fairly reasonable and quality has been much improved. Italian and yellow squashes markets have been relatively flat lately. Cucumber volume is improving and prices are down.
Berries: Strawberries are still struggling with volume and size. Local blackberries are picking up steam. Blueberries are going up due to production dwindling and raspberries remain stable.
Avocados: The California crop is winding down and supplies out of Chile are due to arrive in about 5 weeks. During this transition we expect to see a steady decrease in supply and prices increase. Please take this into consideration.
