The Produce Specialties Report
The Specialties Report
Specialty Veggies- Fingerling potatoes are seriously limited with a 2-3 week gap on the Russian bananas driving the price way up. Consider some alternatives. Purple B’s and Red C’s might come in handy as a fancy potato until the gap closes and the market returns to normal. Baby zucchini is quite
expensive, the best deal is on the baby gold and green summer squashes.
Easter Egg Radishes are a favorite for their great color, the texture and flavor are above average.
Seasonal Items- California Stonefruit is going with the early varieties out of Northern Cal & Coachella. White and yellow peaches, nectarines and Burlat cherries are happening at steep prices until volume builds. Fresh out of SA we are seeing new crop Fuyu Persimmons and Quince, we are getting into their mid Autumn with all the goodies that they can offer including the Forelle and Taylor Gold pears. Chanterelles are pretty much finished with a few sporadic shots coming in now and again. Morels are going but prices are in flux.
Local- Black Dog Farms out of Holtville has a young farmer running a transitional plot growing with organic practices, planning to be certified organic in the near future. There are some great squashes available from crookneck to zucchini, gold eightball, sunburst, green pattypan and macho blossoms. We will offer their products soon.
They also have some tasty white corn with yellow and bicolor corn coming close behind. A great variety of peppers and melons are in the field now growing. Blazei Mushrooms are also known as Almond Tops, locally grown they offer a unique flavor of almond raw and cooked. Please preorder and on a first come first serve basis and as soon as they come in we can send them out.
