By Moceri Produce:
Specialty Veggies- Heirloom Tomatoes are riding the wave back to the bottom while many other tomatoes are on the rise. As the summer actually begins we will be seeing local production take off.
Seasonal Items- Tamarillos both Red and Gold are available now. These unique fruits, originally from Central and South America, are related to the pepino dulce, naranjilla, and tomatoes. Also known as tree tomatoes they have a kiwi like flavor and great visual appeal. They are size packed in trays, expensive but very intriguing. For ideas on their use see www.tamarillo.com for recipe ideas and nutritional facts. Another favorite originating in the Americas is corn, more specifically Red Sweet Corn! A special case of plant selection gone right, from the wild teosinte to the modern corn varieties we can trace an amazing path of development. The red sweet corn is unique in that it is still sweet unlike other varieties that are already very starchy when they start to develop color in the kernels. Impress your customers with a sizzling corn
salsa including other natives to the Americas such as specialty fresh and dried chiles and heirloom tomatoes.
Local- Connelly Gardens has some really tasty red grape tomatoes as well as some nice blocky, thick walled green bell peppers, soon to be red bell peppers too. Some folks don’t realize that green bell peppers are just a colored pepper that has not yet ripened. Stehly Farms Organic is producing an abundance of organic blackberries and we carry them now as our regular product as much as possible. We also have their organic Valencia Oranges and Star Ruby Grapefruit. Peterson Specialty has great tasting Romano Beans, one of the best eating beans of all, with a hearty texture and rich flavor.
