The Specialties Report
Specialty Veggies- We are offering the hothouse Holland Celery Root in a 22# as an alternative to the tiny pithy roots available grown in the CA fields. The product is relatively expensive but the yield is very good. Baby Purple Artichokes are available in the market, they have an awesome look. Large gold and striped beets have come down in price but are still fairly strong.
Seasonal Items- Rainier Cherries are beginning to show up from CA growers, uper expensive but you can be the first kid on the block with the white cherries, for less expensive red cherries go with the 11-11.5 row size. Gold Kiwi Fruit are available out of New Zealand, looks really cool cut with the green kiwis. Crenshaw Melons are a nice smooth, sweet melon with soft, salmon colored flesh, they should continue to improve as the season progresses. Ojai Pixie Tangerines are still around but will be winding down soon along with the other specialty citrus.
Local- Connelly Gardens is producing a crop of exceptionally good yellow wax beans and blue lake beans, not far behind is a great crop of red bell peppers. A fantastic mix of specialty herbs in the Mixed Herb Tops is available for you to garnish a range of plates from salads and appetizers to main dishes and desserts. A complement of variegated sages and special mints is mixed with other culinary standouts. Stehly Farms Organic is starting with organic blackberries and the product is very nice, organic blueberries have come way down. They have a good supply of Hass avos and Valencia oranges along with their Star Ruby grapefruit getting started. Peterson Specialty is offering tasty organic strawberries to complement their exceptional mixed baby lettuces.
