The Specialties Report

Specialty Veggies- Baby gold beets are really short and expensive as growers are transitioning fields. French beans are a good deal right now and we are seeing some reasonable prices on yellow wax as well. Purple snow peas are really deeply colored, a neat alternative to the same old side dish or salad. Red Belgian endive has been a bit tight lately, should be better soon.
Heirloom tomatoes are creeping up in price as the days get shorter and production wanes, amazingly they have remained affordable unlike previous years at this time where there was a big jump in price.
Seasonal Items- Blood Oranges are coming in as the cool weather helps them sweeten up. Puntarella is a leafy vegetable of the chicory family along with frisee, radicchio, endives and dandelions. The lance like leaves mimic dandelion along with it’s bitterness but the hearts boast a unique blanched multi-heading habit appearing like many small fennel shaped bulbs. French Butter Pears are a light green to yellow smooth, sweet pear when ripe, good for cooking when firm, great in holiday dishes, from entrees to desserts. Frozen Peeled Chestnuts bring a rich flavor, to use in stuffing or desserts among other applications, without all the work of shelling and peeling! Get yours now and if you need a lot, preorder so we can make sure we serve you.
Local- Late season tomatoes! Cherry heirlooms 12ct from Connelly Gardens are going strong, they are still on special pricing, a treat at a time when most tomatoes are really expensive. Suzie’s Farm is a local organic farm in the south bay that incorporates a diverse vegetable growing offering in a CSA and farmers market sales. Try their romaine, buttercup squash, rainbow chard and red bunching onions.
