Specialty Veggies- Green Asparagus is super expensive still due to weather issues in all the current growing regions. Try white asparagus as a money saver and it has a slightly more exotic flair to it than the green asparagus.
Specialty beans and squashes are priced well but mixed heirlooms have been limited coming in greener driving the prices higher.
Seasonal Items- Tamarillos both Red and Gold are available now. These unique fruits, originally from Central and South America, are related to the pepino dulce, naranjilla, and tomatoes. Also known as tree tomatoes they have a kiwi like flavor and great visual appeal. They are size packed in trays expensive but very intriguing. For ideas on their use see www.tamarillo.com for recipe ideas and nutritional facts. Blood Oranges are coming in again, from the southern hemisphere where it is mid-winter right now. Cherries will be phasing out soon so get them while they are hot. Mini yellow seedless watermelon are on the market, for a great presentation pair fancy cut slices with the mini red watermelons for contrast and color.
Local- Connelly Gardens has some really tasty yellow wax beans, red grape tomatoes, mixed cherry heirlooms and yellow grape toms as well as some nice blocky, thick walled red bell peppers. Connelly also supplies the vast majority of our culinary herbs and micro greens at this time of year. stehly Farms Organic is producing organic Valencia Oranges and Star Ruby Grapefruit. Peterson Specialty has great tasting Romano Beans, one of the best eating beans of all, with a hearty texture and rich flavor. They have also started with organic heirloom tomatoes and red cherry tomatoes. By the way they are still producing strawberries thanks to the cooler weather.
