The Specialties Report

Specialty Veggies- Baby Beets of all colors have gone up a bit recently, the heat is hard on them. Mixed Heirlooms are really good from a volume perspective, great variety and nice to use in specials where you can take advantage of their great price. Large Tricolor Cauliflower is consistently available from the grower that brings us “Bright Lights” Rainbow Chard.
Seasonal Items- Red Sweet Corn is in a week long gap right now, should be available in early September. Jazz Apples are a cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn, combining the sweetness of the gala with the awesome crunch and tartness Braeburns are known to exhibit. Great for fresh eating as an amenity fruit, your guests will feel you are going above and beyond the call of duty with this offering. Comice Pears have appeared on the scene just starting from the domestic side. A great dessert pear, perfect for tarts or fresh eating. Lychees are finished for the time being. Gold Kiwi are back. Very nice Chanterelle mushrooms, some of the nicest of the year are coming out of Saskatechwan Province in Canada. Rainbow Carrots in the 25# sack are available from Colorful Harvest again after a seasonal gap. Blood Oranges are available from a late domestic source that should hold us until the Australian product hits our shores in early September.
Local- Connelly Gardens has some really tasty red grape tomatoes, mixed cherry heirlooms and yellow cherry tomatoes as well as some nice blocky, thick walled red bell peppers. Peterson Specialty has great tasting Romano Beans and organic heirloom tomatoes. Suzies Farm has a great variety of organic veggies from roots (carrots, radishes, beets) to fruits (tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, eggplant).
