The Specialties Report
Specialty Veggies- Lots of changes with the weather, the baby lettuces, baby squashes and snap peas have gone up with the cooler temps. We are seeing specialty tomato prices go up and a few shortages. Yellow and Orange cluster tomatoes are said to be in a gap for at least a couple of weeks. Mixed Heirlooms, Red Clusters, and especially red and yellow teardrop tomatoes have seen increases. A bright spot is our locally grown baby heirloom cherry tomatoes from Connelly Gardens, a good product for a special price for a limited time.
Seasonal Items- The specialty citrus deluge has begun! We are seeing kumquats, cocktail grapefruit, meyer lemons, pummelos and a variety of tangerines on the market. For those of you who need a stonefruit fix, there are now appearing fresh cherries out of Chile, expensive but not crazy.
Hammi melons are coming in from the desert to sweeten the late fall offerings.
Heirloom apples are offered like the Arkansas Black, a firm dense fleshed sweet/tart variety from yesteryear. A favorite among connoisseurs, this apple is good for cooking or eating out of hand if you have strong teeth.
Specialties- Black Garlic is an aged whole head of garlic, tasting of smoky sweet barbeque sauce this amazing product is good for your health. The best part of comes down to garlic’s goodness with no garlic breath.
Local- Late season tomatoes! Cherry heirlooms from Connelly Gardens
are going strong, we have special pricing on the baby cherry heirlooms 12ct.
Suzie’s Farm is a local organic farm in the south bay that incorporates a diverse vegetable growing offering in a CSA and farmers market sales. Try their cylindra beets, fennel, rainbow chard and red bunching onions.
