The Produce ReportProduce
The freezing temps in Florida are having tremendous affects on produce markets. Tomatoes, citrus and other vegetables are in danger of crop failures. Much of our vegetables crossing through Nogales are now being diverted to the east coast to cover these markets. The result is very sharp price increases on certain items with demand exceeding supply.
Vegetables: Yellow squash has become very scarce, it has tripled in price and quality is suffering from the cold. Zucchini is also on the rise but still a much cheaper alternative. Cucumbers, eggplant, and green bells are good quality but increasing in price. Red and yellow bells have come down dramatically. New crop asparagus is starting to cross this week, look for lower prices.
Berries: New crop strawberries are looking excellent and eating very well. Production is still down with the very cold nights and that is keeping the market fairly high. Raspberry market looks to remain stable this week. Blackberries are less expensive and quality has been very good.
Tomatoes: Our big concern is what happens with Florida’s freeze over the next few days. This could determine our round tomato market for the next month or two. Demand is already starting from the east coast and prices are up sharply. Cherries and romas are showing good quality. Grape tomatoes are still crossing in good numbers with very good quality.
Melons: Seedless watermelon production, color and sugars are falling off with all the cold weather. Prices are increasing. Cantaloupe volume is down and prices are up. Honeydews are a good buy this week and tastes best.
Desert veggies: Romaine hearts have finally come down. Celery is improving as new crop has started.
